How to start a blog was thoroughly dealt with in one of my recent posts. But, most of the questions I came across thereafter was why should a businesses invest in blogging.
Ordinarily, business blog is a marketing asset, just like company social media pages. Making a business owner to accept to start a blog has not that being that ordinary though.
This is why I decided to follow up the how to start a blog for small business in Nigeria post with this; answer all possible questions regarding what a business will gain from blogging consistently.
What makes blog different from website?
A blog is a journal on the internet or your online diary which you frequently update to keep your audience up to date about you or your business. While a website is a collection of web pages or documents which are accessible via the internet.
Only e-commerce websites and a few transactional websites get frequent updates with fresh content while many other businesses leave their webiste to become mere online brochure.
Yet, these dormant websites need leads and new businesses from online users. What an irony?
If your website is optimized for search, your meta tags, image alt text, inbound and internal links are intact, you have a wonderful traffic-generating website. #wehdonesir!
Let’s flip the script and reason like a prospect for a moment…
You have a burning issue to solve. You Google and find a website that sells what solves the problem or offers services that can resolve the issue. Clicking through to the website, you find out more about the organization on their website.
You take their contact details and plan to reach them later. To be honest, you have an idea of who can solve the problem already but there is so much uncertainty as to how that problem is actually going to be solved.
What small business blog offers prospects?
Over time, a blog is supposed to address issues, answer questions common to the industry, support or criticize school of thoughts on matters arising.
In order to give prospects reasons to contact you immediately, you must have, through your blog posts, identified problem(s), provided perspectives to his situation, proffered solution to his problem and positioned your business to effectively tackle the problem.
Your company website introduces your business to the world as a problem solver. It is a consistent blog that helps the world start solving their problems even before they get in touch with you.
Why you need to know how to start a blog?
Whatever form of value you offer, using blog to explain your processes, share your success stories, take a stranger through how you have solved similar problems is not impossible.
One thing is certain, every business that has a product to sell has a story to tell.
Blogging is one effective means of telling your story as a business. When you run promos both online and offline directing prospects to your website, it is a vibrant blog that can make first-time visitors come again after the first encounter.
What can small business blog about?
- explain your product design processes
- answer ‘FAQ’ questions about your product
- provide interactive guide to how best your product works
So many milestones can be achieved small business blog. But, please, don’t use it to blow your honorable trumpet. A blog that is too salesy get boring quickly.
How will blog benefit small business?
- Customer satisfaction and retention
- Brand awareness
- Direct sales
Subscription to newsletter
It may interest you to know that your entire buyer’s journey can be summarized into a blog post.
How to capture buyer’s journey with small business blog?
Use links within the blog post to direct readers to landing page, product pages or other pages
where they can take profitable action.
A blog post could contain text, images, links and a video. While the plain text addresses a particular topic that the blog post is about, you can embed internal links that lead a reader through the conversion process in clickable texts.
Besides text and links, well-crafted images (with Alt text and descriptive caption) can help buttress your topic.
Use Images within the blog post to break down seemingly complex process your customers might have complained about in their feedback
Such instructive blog post can come in handy when your online customer service rep needs a bullet-point to support his/her response to customers’ complaint. Your rep could forward the link or refer the customer to read further.
Use Video to engage prospects.
There is practically nothing any business does that video cannot be used to demonstrate. A video can be used to explain an offer, your CEO could address customers using video on your blog post.
Customers’ experiences can be made into series of short videos. Think of everything you can do to attract and retain customers, a short –less than 15mins max- video will blow your mind in terms of engagement.
What are the roles of blogging in marketing?
This bothers on the content strategy for your blog. Of course, you do not want to wake up
tomorrow morning a blogger for your business without clear, concrete, sustainable plan for research,
development, distribution and promotion of your blog.
As you choose topics, titles prior to blog content development, have at the back of your mind which of your buyer personas that particular blog post is meant for.
Also take into consideration, what stage of the purchase funnel the buyer personas are before
developing the content of your blog post.
You don’t want to target everybody and you don’t want to address more than a particular topic
per blog post.
A blog post could be aimed at attracting strangers to your business, convert new visitors to leads, closing leads to customers or delighting existing customers so they
become promoters of your business.
To attract strangers, your blog post should identify and explain a particular problem. To convert a visitor to a lead, you could blog about an offer while you place a call-to-action for that offer or similar offer in a conspicuous place of the web page.
To close leads into customers, your blog post should position your product or service as the solution to the problem already identified and explained.
Some copy-writing plus appraisal of your offers is allowed here, but be careful not to over-do it.
For customer delight, you could blog about how your brand makes life better for customers. You could address after-sale complaints made via such blog posts. Customers’ suggestions could be the center of blog posts like these as well.
By sincerely putting yourself in your existing customers’ shoes, you definitely will know what to blog about that will promote customer loyalty.
Whose duty should blogging be in my organization?
Much as everyone in your organization may not be good writers, everyone is eligible to make contribution
to a successful business blog.
After you have outlined topics relevant to your purpose, every prospective contributor to your blog content should be guided your blog content mission statement.
It is advisable to have someone or a team dedicated to developing content, distributing and promoting your business blog.
This brings some sense of responsibility. Though, content development should not be limited to this person or team. The reason is that the idea some people within your organization will give towards your blog content could be amazing.
Everyone who interacts with customers, whether in sales, marketing or customer service, should be encouraged to contribute towards your blog. It could be what a customer confide in them or what trend they notice in consumers’ behavior that would trigger your hit blog of all time.
Everyone can’t blog for your business, but everyone has the potential to make meaningful impact on your blog as a stakeholder.
Hope you found one or two reasons why you need to learn how to start a blog today.
Email Marketing has been a lifesaver for me in recent months, though I don’t like writing about it. I feel Email Marketing as a topic is quite exhausted and don’t see anything fresh to talk about in it.
But, each time I mentioned how I built my subscriber list of over 7k LinkedIn contacts, my students then looked curious.
After a couple of such sessions, I found the need to do this self-explanatory blog post to share with you how you can build your own email list of over 10k subscribers,if you have the resources required.
Email Marketing strategy can be a cliche. I mean how effective will it be if I share my best email tactics with you, hoping you will copy and paste it?
Without wasting too many words, let me go straight into how you can build a subscriber list fast, in a cost-effective way.
Apart from how I built the 7k email list, there are several other ways people build their subscriber list.
One common method of list building is newsletter on blogs or website. People publish and promote great content. Then, they ask readers to subscribe in order to get content delivered to their inbox.
Some people entice audience to subscribe with mouth-watering offer. It could be video, ebook, webinar, discount on product or service.
These two methods of building email list are cool. But, how resources and time you have to commit to it really influences your result.
Regarding the method I promised to share with you, it does not take long. It will not cost you a dime, if you already have an active LinkedIn profile. You will export your LinkedIn contacts information, among which their email list will be.
So, let’s take it one step after the other,
Step 1: Click on My Network on Your LinkedIn profile
Step 2: Go to Connections on your LinkedIn profile, click on See All.
Step 3: Click on Manage Synced and Imported Contacts, close to top right corner
Step 4: Go to Advanced Options, click on Export Contacts, close to bottom right corner
Step 5: Go to Choose the Format You Prefer, click on Fast file plus other data
Step 6: Check your registered email with LinkedIn for Link to Download Contact
Step 7: Clean up the email list and save as .csv or recent Excel version on your Computer
Step 8: Create a List in Mailchimp, or your prefered Email platform
Step 9: Name List accordingly, export Email List from your Computer
Step 10: When you send email, remember to tell where you got their email from
If you follow these steps properly, you should have created an email list of your active LinkedIn connections by the end.
REMEMBER: email marketing is permission-based. The permission you got before sending your LinkedIn contacts email using this method was that they accepted to be your contact or connection.
This means you could reach out to them, at least for business or work-related purpose.
Nonetheless, be careful with emails you send to contacts like this. It is important to be engaging, prioritize adding value or provide truly exclusive offers.
Email Marketing tips for effective campaign
- Make Sender Name as familiar as possible
- Use actionable email title
- Always use short but catchy preview text
- Don’t be too salesy, add value
- Don’t use many CTAs, one or two are preferable.
- Use different text formats -bold, italic, clickable text
- Address receiver by name
Take this to the bank. You just build yourself a good email list of familiar community of professionals and colleagues. Hope you find this helpful.

Thus, my first tactic for generating more website traffic for you is to distribute your posts across your social networks with WordPress Publicize feature. This will automatically tell your Twitter followers, Facebook friends, LinkedIn connections, as soon as you publish a new post.
Here is a detailed guide on how to generate more website traffic by using WordPress Publicize Tools.
More Website Traffic-Improve your Keyword Research Techniques
Everyone does keyword research. Everyone creates content based on keywords they research. But how many content creators get the desired volume of website traffic via keywords they have researched?
Maybe a handful. Imma tell you why.
Trying to get more website traffic via keyword solely because it has high volume of average monthly searches is like fetching water with basket. It takes so much time plus efforts but brings meagre results to the table.
This is how to handle it.
You need to filter your keyword suggestions further. You should consider the level of competition on the keyword, the Domain Authority of the website(s) currently ranking for it and if there are paid search campaigns on it.
If you are trying to rank for keyword that a very high Domain Authority is already ranking for, not good is my remark. If the ranking website has moderate Domain Authority but no one pays to rank for this keyword at all, not so good is my remark.
You need to find balance in keyword competition, ranking website’s Domain Authority and worth of the keyword.

More Website Traffic -Use Traffic-generating Apps
There are Traffic Generator Applications that can bring more website traffic to your posts even when you are offline or doing some other things at work.
What are traffic generating apps?
Traffic-generating apps are bots using proxies to appear as though they come from around the world, to sophisticated traffic exchange systems powered by real people and real advertising.
Apart from Traffic-generating bots that will run more website traffic to your blog like Usain, some content aggregator apps or websites accept content which they link to for people to read up.
You could hook up with some of these content aggregator platforms to fetch yourself some beautiful website traffic.
These are Top 10 Traffic Generator Applications on the Web. Learn more about them and deploy them.
More Website Traffic -Use PR sites to broadcast posts/business activities
To get more website traffic by using PR sites, four things are involved:
- Create one-of-a-kind content driven by research, data or insights
- Organize events, promotion or business activity to share with the world
- Establish communication channel with bloggers, journalists and media gurus
- Provide mentions and backlinks to your website in your official press release
I know every business does public relations, but you and I know how many of them are strategic enough with PR to be able to drive followup website traffic from official press releases.
Now that many blogs operate as networks, if few of them re-publish your press release and you have armed it with mentions and back links, you will be in for some social media mentions and multiple link ups.
Too much juice, too much sauce. Too much links, too much juice. (In YCee Omo Alhaji’s voice).
Errrrm, Curata did a freaking list of awesome content promotion tools, some of them are PR Sites that can help you generate more website traffic. Check them out!
More Website Traffic -Try Guest Posting
Guest posting may not generate large volume of website traffic suddenly, but you can be sure to get targeted traffic which can turn into sales qualified leads faster than prospects from regular traffic sources.
Why do I think guest posting brings targeted website traffic?
If you are contributing to a popular website or blog in your industry, with backlinks and subtle brand mentions, you are putting your business in front of familiar audience.
Those who visit authoritative platforms in industries want cutting-edge knowledge, they are mostly not novice. Thus, guest posting can serve as big bold billboard for your business.
As you share your knowledge through guest posting, more people will know you. More people will pick interests in what you do. Some readers will actually connect with you and start following you online.
Interesting partnership offers do come from guest posting too. So, ensure you put your best foot forward when creating content to contribute on authoritative platforms in your industry.
And, don’t forget to negotiate for back links in your guest posts. One or two backlinks to your website won’t hurt both parties; being there, done that!
More Website Traffic -Do Back Link Building Campaign
Getting more website traffic via back link building is different from guest posting. It is different from using PR sites. This is a deliberate marketing campaign through which you prospect and get relevant websites to link to yours.
Backlink building outreach is a marketing campaign on its own, it is an art. It requires time, expertise and money (at times) to achieve great results.
Getting more website traffic from backlink building is worth all the investment though, especially if you get onto relevant websites that will direct qualified leads to you.
Regarding backlink building campaign and how it impacts on your website, let me give you one for the road here. This is very brief but insightful.
Link building involves prospecting new back link sources -maybe sites already linking to competitors, creating content relevant to these link sources, reaching out to these link sources, asking them to loan you a link please!
Sounds pretty simple, right?
But, you need to research, plan, pitch and follow up in reality.
More Website Traffic -Answer Questions on Quora
Quora, oh Quora, my dearest Quora!
How much links you have given me, my dearest Quora!
How much exposure you have given me, my dearest Quora!
How much of a problem solver you made me, dearest Quora!
This sums it up for getting more website traffic by answering questions on Quora. People who search Quora for solutions have genuine need for such knowledge.
Nobody wants to sound stupid, but they can get more personalised answers to their worries than regular how-to blog posts. So, when you find questions related to your business on Quora, answer painstakingly.
You can research Quora questions to form content topics, it is worth the effort. It is even more than worth it because after publishing the content, you have audience waiting to devour your blog post, so far it adds value.
Do you know you can blog on Quora?
I won’t say too much. I am heading to Quora now, right now, to search for questions on getting more website traffic. I will answer all the questions and link back to this post.
That’s the code!
More Website Traffic -Do Email Marketing Right
You can get more website traffic by doing email marketing the effective way. I didn’t write do email marketing. I wrote, DO EMAIL MARKETING RIGHT.
And I mean it. Please, do not spam people in the name of getting more website traffic. It is not nice.
Email marketing has been over killed in billions of blog posts by those who are good at it and those who know email too much to learn how it is done effectively. I won’t join the ‘best way to do email marketing’ bandwagon anyways.
More Website Traffic? Participate in Niche Forums
Participating in niche forums in order to generate more website traffic is similar to guest posting. But, it is quite unique in its own right.
Niche forums are open to more contributors, though over time some members of the community become super users, based on their contributions and how other members engage with them.
In Niche forums , you do not go empty-handed if you really want reasonable amount of relevant website traffic. You should add meaningfully to conversations going on the threads. Ask brilliant questions and provide solutions when you can.
The more you participate and gain forum members’ respect, the more attention they give to content you post there. Of course, you don’t want to post content into active niche forums without mentioning your brand and linking back to your website.
More Website Traffic? Repurpose Popular Content into New Format and Share
I know a couple of ways you can use to get more website traffic by repurposing your content or other people’s content. But I will share only one here and now.
Just one? Yes. I’m in my house, coman beat me!
You can re-purpose other people’s content and share with them in exchange for mention or back links.
This is how it works.
Assuming you come across a blog post many people are engaging with. If you can find how to tie the popular blog post to your business, product or previous blog post, use the information on that popular content in new format and share with original owner.
You can re-purpose a blog post into infographics or video. You can even do a podcast inspired by that blog post you read. This popular content already have audience -it became popular because people engaged with it. Right?
Re-creating the same content into richer funkier format, will give you access to this audience. Seek necessary permission to reuse another person’s intellectual property so you don’t get into trouble in the name of getting more website traffic.
Hope you find these 10 ways to get more website traffic helpful. Wishing you more website traffic, more leads, more sales and more profit, today and forever. Amen!

Why is Keyword Research Important?
You need keyword research to match your content with searchers’ intent. That is the SEO side of things. For other campaigns, keyword research helps you identify interests and behavioural patterns of target audience you are out to get.
It is easy to assume audience will behave in some pattern you can predict or they will use the exact word you use in your content (web pages) to look for your small business.
But, it does not just go that way.
Prospect search as words happen to them. Thus, keyword research puts you in the mind of target audience, based on many of such terms already used across the Internet.
Keyword research tools help you identify words or phrases you will use to present information you want to pass across such that search engine can relate your content to search queries used by searchers.
Keyword research moves you from many random search terms to commonly used keywords that search engines already used to index content and web pages,
Types of Keyword: Short tail Keywords
Short tail keywords are 2-word phrase (3-word sometimes) commonly used search terms. Short tail keywords are quite popular among digital marketers.
Short tail keywords are known for having huge search volumes because they are easily thrown around.
For offers that are quite unique, let’s say you are monopoly or no business offers what you sell online yet, short tail keywords are great.
In most cases, the first few businesses who start selling something online get a hold on short tail keywords, as they are easy to rank for when there is weak competition or none at all.
However, as the online market for such product becomes bigger, more competitors fight hard to rank for certain short tail keywords. At this point, it becomes quite expensive and more difficult to rank for such short tail keywords.
These are keyword suggestions for skinny jeans, from search terms in above example
Types of Keyword: Long tail Keywords
Long tail keywords add few more modifiers to short tail keyword to turn out unique. The essence of using long tail keywords is to beat stiff competition surrounding short tail keywords.
Long tail keywords:
- Are longer than 2 to 3 words
- Have less search volume
- Have lower competition
- Are more targeted
Long tail keywords help small business reflect more of what they offer in the keyword they seek to rank for.
From above example, one of the keyword suggestions, skinny jeans for men, can be used as long tail keyword for creating content, since it already has high search volume.
This approach will bring you more visibility and traffic, then visitors can discover more types of skinny jeans you sell at their first visit.
Types of Keyword: Question Keywords
Question keywords are rarely used, though they are quite effective. They provide keyword opportunities for questions that audience are asking concerning a search term.
If both short tail and long tail keywords have very stiff competition, you could search for questions that are being asked concerning such product or service.
These are Question Keyword suggestions for Skinny Jeans for Men, one of them is being searched for already, where to buy mens skinny jeans.
Offline Keyword Research -Brainstorming
Brainstorming is an unusual source for base keyword suggestions. It is offline keyword research technique and it is great for small business that does not have existing data with which you can plan and implement digital marketing campaign.
During situation analysis, you can call for brainstorming session, to include clients team. It will be of advantage to brainstorm with client’s sales team, customer service team, traditional marketing team in order to fetch a wide range of terms used for what you want to market.
A collection of these suggested terms, based on interaction with customers and the market space, can then be taken to online keyword research tools for further filtering.
Offline Keyword Research – Industry Jargon
Industry jargons (registers) are terms that are particular to certain profession. They form good source of base keyword suggestions as well. What is great about using industry jargons as keyword suggestions is that they are already synonymous with your offer among your target audience.
Collect industry jargons, as many of them as possible, and use them as keyword ideas which you can refine in keyword research tool like Google Keyword Planner.

There are couple traditional methods for researching your competitors. Beyond marketing insights marketers plan to get from competitor research, you could get some keyword ideas from it.
One way to get keyword ideas via competitor research is to pay customers of your top competitors to feel questionnaires. You make your competitors’ loyal customers to debrief you on how they relate with competitors’ products and what terms your competitors use to refer to what you offer.
Collect terms used by competitors’ customers in filling your questionnaires into a keyword suggestion sheet which you will feed into online keyword tools for more insights.
